Host Rocket, shoulder fired and bent on destruction - Review by Ross D. Chesley submitted on August 28, 2003
Customer's web site: www.chesleyconsultants.com
Length of time hosted by this company: 1 year - 3 years
Date when last hosted by this company (as of August 28, 2003): Current customer

Customer service rating: 3 out of 10
Technical quality rating: 3 out of 10
Cost rating: 7 out of 10

I've been with this company for two years and recommended and referred people to them -- few if any problems masked the behind the scenes infrastructure and staffing issues.

If they think to change their name I suggest Third World Hosting. Their basic services are almost always unreliable.

Their communication about scheduled and unscheduled events is poor, and they seem unable to resolve the chronic and systemic issues to keep basic things like e-mail up and running. The network status may as well be a static web page for all good it does.

When I signed up with them, their advertising stated I would have a Spam Blocking feature. Two years and they are still working on it but have removed it from the control panel and buried it. They offered SMTP server service, but now they do not want people to use it either.

A while back, they allowed hackers to get in and overwrite the index.html pages on several domains and servers. They never communicated anything about it and never restored the pages. It was up to me to discover the problem and fix it myself! The say there was no security threat, but but what confidence should we have in that?

The only way this host deserves the "Rocket" name is if you get too close you will get burned, and if you depend on them they burn out way too fast.

Other hosting companies are better. Sometimes you get what you pay for, other times you can get what you paid for at a third the price. It is not a matter of being cheap, it is just important to monitor a host and switch at the first sign of problems. The only message for hosts that seems to get through is reviews like these and people that will switch at the first sign of bad service.

They suck! - Review by John submitted on July 13, 2003

They have almost nothing good about them besides the cost. They have VERY slow responses to problems, they have idiots working the tech support. They do not email to tell you they are charging you $147 for your account, they just do it. THEN they don't even use that for everything you signed up for. No, they dont tell you they don't even do that. They let my domain go out and then gave me an email saying I had to pay like $700 or something.

Then they delete my mp3's (I made the mistake of having my computer go down, and uploaded everything) however I had no domain name for anyone to FIND the mp3's. I put something on their forums, they delete it. I guess they don't allow bad things to be said about them in their forums.
I also had the problems of them always being down, emails being down, bandwidth (I upgraded to 750 megs) dropped to 200 megs. THEN the tech support person telling me "everything is fine."

I don't care so much they deleted the mp3's, thats kinda fine. Except what they deleted was also stuff like "Beethoven, Mozart" and other stuff. Things that nobody can have a copyright on, nor is it illegal. I had may 90% as classical music. Yet they deleted it.
It was MY site, I paid for it, I was responsible for it. How DARE They log into my account and delete stuff. Not to mention I might have made that stuff. It was my only copy of many things, they deleted them.

Go with someone else, not these jokers. They deserve to be taken out of business.

Down the crapper - Review by Rex Reed submitted on June 30, 2003

HostRocket used to be a darling. It used to have the best service at the best price. Now, it's a load of cow turd. Why? because the servers are always failing and email and hosting are frequently interrupted.

The email systems would go down like clockwork every day at 4PM. Web hosting would fail intermittently. Their support techs would always say "they are aware of the problem"... but can't seem to do anything to fix it.

Simply put, this host is a piece of crap. If you don't care about your site and don't mind 2-3 hours of downtime a day at a price you can easily beat, then HostRocket is the place to go. Otherwise, if you are a professional, like myself, and care about your email and website being reliable -- stay away from HostRocket by all means.

Let HostRocket be an example to others: just because you were once good, doesn't mean that will always be the case.

Great Services/Awesome Support - Review by submitted on June 26, 2003

From day one, when they opened their company, the service was great. I transferred from another company who stole my domain name and offered horrible support.

Moving over to Hostrocket was a peace of mind. Brendan was great help from the very beginning. He knew what he was doing. Obviously as the company grew bigger more employees were hired. All the tech staff were extremely helpful and thorough with short, understandable answers to my questions. I upgraded my account to their $60 a month plan to find out that their service was even WAY better and the trouble tickets (barely any sent) were answered immediately.

Obviously I see some people who were not pleased. For those basing your review on the company, you shouldn't judge any one else's opinion because we are all different and respond differently. Just like in a previous post COMMUNICATION is the key to great service. If YOU don't even know what the problem is and can't at least explain it correctly to the tech support, how is he/she supposed to know what the problem is.

So I conclude, very great company and stable computers compared to many other companies i've hosted with.

Lot's of features/poor performance - Review by Anonymous submitted on May 12, 2003

Well, I've been very impressed with HostRocket's features for the price-point.  When the servers are up, then their package is quite a good deal for the price...WHEN their servers are up.  They have WAY too much down time and network lag on their throughput for anyone doing a serious site.  I'm trying to run my consulting business from this site, and I can't rely on HostRocket.
I've made inquiries about getting my money back for unused months and leaving their equipment early (I paid for 1 year-my bad), but I don’t know what they’ll say.
If you just want to run your site for home and personal fun, you’ll probably be fine going with them, and the price is right.
Their support is thin, and you rarely get anything back that addresses your issue.  If you’re a newbie…forget it, all their “support” docs are setup for people that are veterans in Linux/CGI/hosting your own domains.  I didn’t have any troubles, but I can see there are huge gaps in their knowledge base if you don’t know what you’re doing.

I paid a premium price for premium service before switching to HostRocket.  I am paying a LOT less and the service matches the price.  I know my site is down occasionally and if I used it for e-commerce that would be a big problem.  The email services are lousy and I only use HostRocket for incoming mail.  Tech support is not horrible, but the only way to reach them is via e-mail and it takes a day or two to complete a communication.  When I upgrade my site I am upgrading my hosting service.

Two words to describe hostrocket.com........THEY STINK

We hosted our site with them for 7 months. The first month was fine, but it all went downhill from there. Their system is crapola, the billing was always messed up, customer service is nonexistent.

The founders should be drawn and quartered and their body parts spread to the far reaches of the Internet where they shall serve as a warning to other "shady hosting companies" that charge honest, hard working consumers for services that fall absurdly short of providing.

I started hosting with Hostrocket 2 or so weeks ago. So far I've had 3 down times - including one that lasted several hours due to "scheduled maintenance." I've had one period of PHP not seeing MySQL, which is as good as being down, and now I can see everyone's database on my server. A hacker's dream come true. C'mon hostrocket, get your act together. I'm switching as soon as I find someone good.

They suspended usage for MySQL "overuse" which they have previously refused to QUANTIFY.  In other words, they purposely leave stuff off the user agreement that they can then come back on and hold the data hostage until the user switches to a higher-priced (quite higher) package.

I've had problems with hostrocket.com from the very start!
They offer horrible service and don't answer their email tickets.
Their number 1-800-545-6737 which is posted on their site don't even work and you get an answering machine.
I've requested my money back, but they haven't answered me!
Could someone here tell me to which authority can I complain about these guys to?
The Better Business Bureau perhaps?
I'm switching to ipowerweb!

We have been with hostrocket.com for four months, and had been happy with their service up until now.  They have evidently had some issues with hacking on their servers, and decided that our website (which was well within the limits associated with our service plan) was taking up too many resources.  Rather than warning us that there were problems, so that we could either restrict the amount of resources we were using, or allow us to gather our database off of their site and find another provider, they cut off our account and refuse to allow us access to our account, even to retrieve our data from the database.  They insist that we upgrade to a plan that is six times the cost we are paying now if we want to access our data again, and even now, when we have given into their demands, supplied them with the credit card and authorization to charge us an exorbitant amount, they have still not brought our website back up.  We have tried to call their "24/7" support phone line, only to be greeted with a message saying that due to the number of support tickets that they have today, they are not taking phone calls.  This has been going on for four days now, and we are still not able to contact them.  DO NOT BELIEVE THE LIES they post on their site about the availability of support.  Do not count on them to work with you to maintain your website.  They will not.  In my dealings with them, they have shown no sense of responsibility towards their customers, and they have not honored their end of the deal.

I've used several web hosting companies in the past, but my worse decision was to use hostrocket.com
These guys are absolutely horrible and shouldn't be in business.
There is no phone support despite they say they have. They do not get back to emails.
My site has been down several hours every day in the week and it continues.

I need to look for someone else, then demand a full refund! If I don't get it we will seek a lawsuit!

You are being forwarned! Don't use hostrocket.com to host your website.

I originally signed up for Hostrocket's monthly plan.  For some odd reason, they signed me up for yearly.  I was billed $197.  Even if I had payed all at once, they claimed hosting was $12 a month.  A year of this would add up to $144.  When I sent an inquiring e-mail, I was told the remainder was spent on "Installation Fees".  After checking their site, I found no information on such "Installation Fees", and even if they did have any, $50 is ridiculous.  I attempted to contact them via the hotline on their main page only to receive an answering machine for over a week.  Their response to troubleshooting e-mails was sluggish and utterly non-helpful.  My site was down for three days in a row at one time for something they called a "hardware issue".

Their service often fails and the download response was regularly very slow.  The customer support was a mess and when the sight went down could not be contacted.  We stopped using their POP mail very early on because it was hopelessly out of service much of the time.

I have always had good dealings with HR.com support staff. They respond to trouble tickets immediately and thuroughly. The site is hardly ever down and when it is, it is only for a short time. You got tons of space and bandwidth during specials and I won't change hosts unless I am at gun point or they suddenly start to suck. :P

HostRocket is one of the worst hosting choices available. I would say that it is the absolute worst, but I haven't tried every host on the planet.

This outfit has a slick website and that's it. The site I had hosted with them was extraordinarily SLOW when it was working. My site was down, completely down hundreds of times. Mini outages occurred daily. Some outages lasted hours. They have NO phone support. All support is via trouble tickets. Quite often, when your site is down, so is THEIR site... so you can't send trouble ticket. This is a company that offers DISMAL performance. Stay Away!

This has been the worst provider I've had yet.  Constant small configurations problems have plagued my site since I opened an account there.

Their billing database was stolen and my credit card used illegaly.

And every time they "upgrade" something their system crashes for several hours and doesn't work properly for days afterward.

My email was down for 5 days in a row once...

Absolutely horrible and slow email tech support, usually with people who have no idea what they are doing.

It is hard to find a good website hosting. I think that the Government must give better protection to consumer of website hosting because the abuse of people taking website down, charging a lot, and giving you in exchange a really bad service. Never pay in advanced to a hosting company or will be worse for you and your website.

Now, I've seen some fairly bad reviews here that amaze me because they parallel my experiences with a hosting provider I had before hostrocket.  Because of my previous experience, I researched several companies very carefully and have been pleased with my account with hostrocket as a result.  As a realistic person, and a technician myself, I can respect the occasional delay or unexpected hardware or configuration problem, as long as it gets fixed.  I myself have had very few problems with my site and those I had were minor and resolved within a day or two after I clearly stated through trouble tickets my observances of the problems.  I do know however that when they migrated their servers to a new location, some hiccups occured and then immediately afterwards they upgraded their mail servers, causing email problems for several people.  Luckily, I was not affected anymore than have to setup all the email accounts for my site and I had a small list. I can imagine the headache a large list would've caused.

Now from a tech perspective, having witnessed tech support from both sides and also witnessing the behaviour of some other hostrocket customers from time to time, I would suggest that several people's disappointment or dissatisfaction with service stems from their own lack of communication or even outright hostility when trying to get an issue resolved.

The biggest gap in customer/technician relations is oftentimes translating the nature and extent of the problem effectively.

Overall, I've been satisfied with the service I've experienced from hostrocket although with their recent email snafu, I worry it hurt their business too much as well as their reputation and I wonder how that will affect me down the line.

on an endnote, I read a post here giving the impression that hostrocket requires frontpage extensions.  that is not true, while they supposedly support frontpage extensions, it's not a requirement for the backend or any hosted site or else i wouldn't touch their service with a ten foot pole. just wanted to clear that up.

If all you are looking for is web hosting, I cannot complain too much about their web hosting service.

E-mail service they offer is another story.  Today is the third day in a row where sending mail to AOL users will not work.  AOL blocked all e-mail from Host Rocket due to an excessive amount of spam from their servers.  I sent them a ticket two days ago.  Their support site (www.rocketsupport.com) still shows have issues sending mail to AOL.

Host Rocket also added IMAP functionality to their system a couple months ago.  The upgrade was a complete mess.  They required users to change to the new host name in the e-mail client.  It wasn't a big deal for me since I'm the only person that sends mail via my site, but would have been a major headache for any company with a lot of inexperienced users.  Sending of e-mail was hit and miss for a while during the upgrade.

Their lack of change control, and notification is pathetic.  It seems most changes take place during prime hours, and not during non-peak hours.

The AOL blocking issue was the last straw for me.  I am now researching other companies to host my site.

Major problems with their servers which I think are misconfigured.

Directories require a tailing slash... This makes it difficult for
visitors to browse the site successfully.  Support says this is just the way it is.  Hmmmmmmmmm, THANKS FOR THE HELP!!!

Email was down half the time.  :(

HostRocket has fast customer support during the day via email though.  :|

I cancelled account after 24 hours...

They couldn't keep their cron daemon running after reboots. The sendmail support is not reliable. MySql was crashing often, but better now. I've had to do a lot of workarounds because of their problems.

Seems like youre getting a deal with lots of diskspace and bandwidth.  Until stuff crashes or doesn't work (which happens often).  They only offer email based support.  So you send them a "trouble ticket" to explain the problem.  They reply to your question with a question, and then when you reply back, you never hear from them again about it.  They stranded my business without email for days on end on many occasions.

Email failed severly and often.  Tech support was non-existant.  Email only tech-support.  Received replies on maybe 10% of tech-support inquiries.  Web-site was off line often and was not fixed within 48 hours on some occasions.  Billing problems, contact problems.  Slow server.  Refused to upgrade our old plan.

the WORST service ever.  I couldn't even get my e-mail to operate reliably.  I kept asking for support and they would pass my request around, each person asking a stupid question that I would still answer & it just kept circling w/o any help whatsoever.  In the end, they just stopped responding, because they couldn't solve the problem, but it took almost 4 months.  Leaving them too was a nightmare of non-support, requesting whatever I needed, over and over and over.

I hosted with RH for 2 years. The first 1 1/2 years everything was great. Brendan was wonderful in assisting me with problems. But they changed many facets of their service including how I could pay. I had to relocate my service because they no longer allowed me to pay in advance by check or MO. They gave poor customer service in the end. Very disappointed in their service at the end.

Hosting for 3 months, so far a pretty mixed bag. Some downtown and ongoing email problems. I started getting a ton of spam sent to the default address they asigned (which I don't use), so I can only assume they sold it out. There have been some bright spots--the live text help rep solved a problem, but only after 4 days of going back and forth with trouble tickets didn't get the job done. Hoping it gets better, I will have to move if it doesn't.

Setting up with HostRocket should have been a warning. It took forever and there was little support. I attempted to get a hold of a live person when troubles began. You will NOT find a phone number ANYWHERE on their site. When you finally find their number via 411, you will find that it is a labrynth of "press 3 for.." and dead extensions. I would rather gnaw off my extremities than continue working with Host Rocket.

What you see is NOT what you get. Hostrocket appears to have a great offering - they pack a ton into their packages. But the downtime has gotten stupid. They don't respect their customers. They IGNORE inquiries/support tickets and have failed on their uptime guarantee - and will not deliver on a promised refund for two months of DISservice!

I've filed a complaint with the Attorney General's Office and with Better Business Beaureu.  I'd love to head a class action suit on behalf of all of their customers. I have no idea why the reviews on Hostsearch do not corroborate those here.

I would not recommend this host for the following reasons:
1. Nothing works. 50, at most 75% uptime for email / webmail
2. Email compromised - I am getting spamming complaints from people to whom I have supposedly sent emails, but have not
3. Trouble ticket service fast, but replies not relevant

In short, these guys are unprofessional, and hide the fact by offering a 'too good to be true' deal.

1. Although Hostrocket boasts 350 MB memory psace and 15 GB bandwith, linking to its site is agonizingly slow.
2. Hostrocket's front page does not allow the client to access his/her site.
Once you access your site, there is no clear way to upload your pages. You must have frontpage extensions, meaning that you must use MS Frontpage. All this is not mentioned before you buy the hosting sevice. Even after you buy, you learn about those extensions only indirectly after clicking erratically here and there until you find the link that lead to the answer to your question.
Then you have to submit a trouble ticket, i.e. a question to tec support, and wait until they get to you. For a host that expensive, the information needed to run a website a site should be made more easily available.

I was hosted at hostrocket for seven months, and currently I have no host because of my choice.  I was told to leave this place because of having too many visitors, even without going over the bandwidth limit.

What drew me to this company was the low prices, with the high ammount of space.  Which is true, you do get this much, which is a good thing.  There's lots of space, and lots of bandwidth for use.  The only thing is that FTP servers, Web servers, and MySQL servers were constantly down, so at times this bandwidth couldn't even be used anyways.

Customer service was good.  They respond very quickly, I once recieved a response in less than ten minutes of responding.  They were quite helpful, though they didn't always answer my questions I had to the fullest way, but good enough.

Speeds for FTP servers were sometimes slow, but for the most part, they were really fast.  It was either really fast, or down *dies*

I was kicked out for having too many people come simultaneously, and no where in the Terms of Service do they define what "System Overuse" was.  I don't feel that they have enough information on how many Appache Processes are allowed.

I don't recommend hostrocket.  The prices are low, but you get what you pay for =/
HostRocket.com representative's response:

Your site was suspended on three different occasions for using too many server resources. You have to remember that you are on a shared server with other users. Your site was causing the other sites on the server to load slowly or not at all. We do not like suspending people but we cannot have one user on the server hogging server resources.

HostRocket will never admit to doing anything wrong. They claimed that my measley Harry Potter fan site almost crashed the Apache web server. Then, a few weeks later, after I had demanded a refund, HostRocket discovered a "bug" in their tracking software, causing incorrect readouts. But at least they gave me a refund.

My site had been down far more than what is acceptable. Host Rocket claimed that the backbone company was to blame. So , HR claimed to start migrating servers from old datacenter to a new datacenter.

Supposedly, about half of HRs servers had migrated to new datacenter, including HR's pwn web site. Now, my site and HR's site is down, although they should be at completely separate datacenters.

If HR's web server and the server that our site is hosted on are supposed to be at completely different datacenters, then the fact that both are down can mean only one thing....

Most people gravitate towards Hostrocket because of its grotesquely low monthly price with almost twice the amount of bandwidth and webspace compared to similarly-priced hosting plans.

Unfortunately, you get what you pay for.

Be prepared for numerous downtimes, no phone support, and non-working e-mail (my e-mail has been about 5% functionable since day one).

Not recommended.
