So many reasons why Yahoo Geocities sucks; Expensive!, No cgi or other programing support, the worst customer service I've ever encountered, the control center is useless, and don't forget the censorship.

Good so far - Review by submitted on July 29, 2003
Customer's web site: N/A
Length of time hosted by this company: less than a month
Date when last hosted by this company (as of July 29, 2003): Current customer
Plan used: Business Standard - $19.95/month
Customer service rating: 10 out of 10
Technical quality rating: 6 out of 10
Cost rating: 10 out of 10
Overall rating: 10 out of 10
I've only been a customer with them for a few days, so it would be premature to give a complete review, but so far I'm impressed.

My last host was incredibly reliable and friendly, but their site was archaic and their feature set was "so 1999" you could say. Nothing special about them.

Yahoo! Web Hosting, on the other hand, comes across as fresh and hungry -- exactly the kind of host you want. They have a wide variety of features (including subdomains and generous 25MB email accounts) and their phone support has been very responsive, even when I called at 2 in the morning.

Running pings of my site, it appears a bit slower than my old host, but it isn't noticeable to the general public.

Feature wise, it is very customizable. I am paying about $20 per month for 25GB of data transfer and 100MB of space. Also has 25 email accounts with 25MB of space for each one.

A positive review? - Review by Chris Lang submitted on July 28, 2003
Customer's web site: Submitted but not made public
Length of time hosted by this company: over 3 years
Date when last hosted by this company (as of July 28, 2003): Current customer
Plan used: Modified Plan: $34.95 (extra disk space)
Customer service rating: 10 out of 10
Technical quality rating: 10 out of 10
Cost rating: 10 out of 10
Overall rating: 10 out of 10
Gosh, after reading all of these comments, I'm wondering if we're all talking about the same host here... I was with Simplenet in 1997-1998 when they have their "unlimited" plans. These of course, are laughable for any serious host since the advent of cable modems, DSL and high speed internet. Yahoo aquired them and forced everyone into a 'new plan'. My pricing stayed relatively the same. I pay $34.95 a month, for the business plan, plus some extra disk space. I've have been WAY OVER my bandwidth and disk space limits for NEARLY THREE YEARS and have yet to receieve any notifications, price increases, etc. My website now tranfers about 10 GIGS A DAY and my disk space is pushing 1 gig.

They haven't noticed, or don't have the means to notice (maybe my site resides on an old Simplenet server, in a closet somewhere).

Bascially, there is NOWHERE that I could host my website for $34.95 a month. I consider myself blessed that they are either ignoring my bandwidth and disk usage, or just don't have the resources to keep track of them).

In the 5 years I've hosted with them, I've only had to get in touch with tech support 4-5 times. Typically it was something I MESSED UP ON. I've been basically immune to email problems because I had all my email forwarded to another address.

I also host with Sectorlink.com (awesome, I can't say enough about them), and run all my CGI through there. I pay 5 bucks a month for a small package there just for this purpose).

It sounds like a lot of these reviews come from people who had billing/identity problems. The Yahoo wallet makes it pretty simple to take care of everything, and I've had to retrieve my wallet password a few times because I was too stupid to write it down.

So, in general, great support (that I haven't had to use very often), fantastic service (My site very rarely goes 'down' and my transfer rates are fantastic), and their customer support, while not on par with other hosts, is just fine for someone who doesn't have to go to tech support everytime their site has a hiccup.

I know several high-profile individuals who host with Yahoo, and have heard nothing but raving reviews. I don't believe the reviews here paint an accurate picture of Yahoo's customer base. (I can understand this, because why would somebody who was happy with their host be looking for a new one?).

They have had problems with their email going down and the technical support is absolutely rotten. We don't pay much for them and we don't get much either!! Yahoo accquired us when they bought out R Connect. I was spoiled with the service I got from RConnect.

Not reliable. ONLY offer email support for php. Our site has gone down repeatedly. To sum up business practices and customer service they don't care.

We were blown away with how bad their service has been.

Yahoo Website servises email is horrible! - Review by Jim Herrmann submitted on July 8, 2003

Technical quality rating: 2 out of 10
Cost rating: 2 out of 10

I have used Yahoo's Webstie Services $14.95/month web hosting for over two years now. Everything was fine until 3 months ago when their mail servers went bad. About once every two weeks I cannot receive email for several hours. Today (7/8/2003), the mail server has been down for OVER 16 hours!

They have supposedly replaced the servers, but obviously the fix didn't work. Their tech. support people do not begin working until 11 am Pacific Time! This is unacceptable.

I'm looking for a new host.

P.S. I have had NO problem with their web hosting, just thier HORRIBLE email.

P.P.S. I believe that the $14.95/month plan is no longer offered. The folks at Yahoo I spoke with were rather confusing. My current plan is Yahoo's "Website services," but Yahoo now offers "Web hosting." They offered no price incentive as an existing Yahoo customer. Bad service!

NO tech support.  Surly billing department.  Charged me for an extra month when I left.  Had two sites they charged setup fee for both.  Next time I logged on setup was FREE.  I called and they said "Gee that's too bad!" Speed also poor.  Forget it.  Use IPOWERWEB!

Can change Primary Contact - Review by Zorco submitted on May 23, 2003

You can not change the Primary Contract information if ownership is transfered unless you completely delete the account and re-create it. This is a joke. The websites are tied to one email account and that email account has a Yahoo Wallet through which the accounts are billed.  YOU CAN NOT CHANGE THE PRIMARY EMAIL ACCOUNT AND THEREFOR YOU CAN'T CHANGE TO A NEW WALLET WITH A DIFFERENT CREDIT CARD.

Your only choice is to back everything up and then delete the original website and then created a new website (with the same domain name) with a new email/wallet combo.

This is unacceptable.

How frigin hard would it be for Yahoo to let you change the Primary Email tied to the Website Account??????

Yahoo is fine if your requirements are a the most simple level but it you are trying to run a business ... I have real questions about their additude to real business.

Decent, but feature poor - Review by submitted on May 23, 2003
Customer's web site: N/A
Length of time hosted by this company: 1 year - 3 years
Date when last hosted by this company (as of May 23, 2003): Current customer
Plan used: $15 hosting plan (can't remember the name)
Customer service rating: 4 out of 10
Technical quality rating: 9 out of 10
Cost rating: 4 out of 10
Overall rating: 6 out of 10
I went with Yahoo because basically they couldn't stuff me around, y'know, steal money from my accounts, etc, because they were big and reputable. On that score, they've been good, but then I haven't pressed the boundaries much yet.

I haven't really had too many technical problems with them, my email program sometimes can't log on -- they're having problems they keep telling me -- but other than that pretty good. I rarely (once a month) FTP, but never been bounced. I don't get email bounce often, either.

However, the times I HAVE had to deal with customer service have been a little frightening. The people do their best, it seems, but... put it this way, I am just glad I have two email accounts! Email is about the only help resource (their help web sheets are useless unless you're a beginner). Their response seems to be too by the book. I had intermittant but repeat email connection woes, they requested my account details to connect and say "oh, it works now", which solves nothing. But then they're not interested in solving, it seems.

However, ultimately, why I will leave them will be because of their lack of features and their extortionate prices. No PHP, no MySQL, no subdomains, and seemingly no option to get any unless I sign up for a business account. And while $15/mth aint tooooo bad, I expect a lot from my hosts.

So, overall, decent reliability, poor support, high cost, poor features. I would recommend them only if you're new to the world of hosting.

Yahoo hosting is OK for basic web sites... But their advanced servcies with mySQL and PHP are a joke. Very unreliable and have lost entire databases from my site. The SQL service will be magically unavailable for long periods of time with no explanation.

Their customer service is apathetic at best.

If you have static HTML and want a cheap site it is good, but expect no more.

I registered my domain name with them and paid for a website yet they never set it up. My domain name remained parked there (since they wouldn't give me the website I'd PAID FOR!) for years until I finally managed to get them to give up registration to another company. What a fight! In addition, they now spam their own customers. Steer clear!

Good reliability, marginal (at best) customer service - Review by Anonymous submitted on April 16, 2003

Technically, the service is nearly flawless. I’ve only had one problem in 2+ years I’ve been with them. Technical support, although available, can be very picky. Do yourself a favor and remember *each and every* field you enter in your application for services. Write them down. Save them. Keep them in at least two locations with at least two different people. *Every* last silly field. Get just one of them wrong when they ask you and kiss your account goodbye.

I don’t like giving out personal information to just anyone. Needless to say, I made some stuff up. “As long as they get paid,” I figured.

Because I couldn’t answer the questions I filled out on my application, tech support refused to deal with me. Refused. Literally. As a previous reviewer pointed out: refused.

My email accounts were inaccessible. I couldn’t remember *one* of the questions. The best they would do was “close the account and reopen it.” A.K.A.: kiss all your saved emails and web files goodbye. Poof. Gone.

I went through five tech support people pointing out how silly their I.D.-ing policy was. In there attempt to “protect” their customers, they were screwing them.

The email problem I had was their problem. All they needed to do was clear it but they “couldn’t” until they got a request from the account holder. That was me. But they wouldn’t take my word for it. Regardless of how much payment information I had, etc.

One person, one, uno, took mercy on me. Although s/he didn’t say it, I could hear the mercy in the voice. S/he told me s/he couldn’t help without the identity information. Two hours later, my email account came back on-line. I will never dime that person out. Ever. Total downtime: one week. I have subsequently reverse engineered the information they have and can re-access my account.

Let me sum up my experience.  Absolutely no support and when you eventually manage to find contact details they pass you on to another part of the organisation which then never responds.  I cannot believe they are still in business with this attitude.

I knew it was time to move our site from yahoo business hosting when after numerous calls to technical service to determine why our site was unavailable and no emails were being received, they responded "the internet is getting busier all the time and you have to expect delays on websites since there is so much more internet traffic".
To their credit, I was always able to reach their technical support people even if if they were never able to solve our problems.

I signed up with Yahoo for Business Starter.  Already had a website with featureprice.com (DON'T USE THEM!) Yahoo stated in email agreement that if I was unable to re-delegate domain, would receive a refund of the $15 "set up fee." Was unable to contact featureprice (they do not answer emails or answer phone)so could not get domain redelegated. Thus far, Yahoo has refused to refund.  Have been on the phone with them for over an hour (my dime, since no 800 number) and still have not recieved refund.  Finally had to contact credit card company to dispute charges.  Supervisor at Yahoo stated that I am interpreting agreement wrong.  (How many ways can you interpret "If the domiain re-delegation was unsuccessful or the user does not repond for 15 days, your credit card will be refunded"?)

These bozos changed a key setting when using Outlook Express, and didn't notify their customers - no email, no notification on-line (OK, technically they did post it on-line, but it was a week later).  You have to get really lucky to find the tech support number.  And I was trying to get my domain registry information, and was locked out of my account maintenance.  I was putting in the correct credit card number for verification (I could see it on the screen), but when I e-mailed support, they claimed it wasn't the correct number.  They wouldn't look in their own database to confirm it.  I'm on this site tonight looking for a new host.

in the past 2 months since I signed up with them I've had more slow loads, downtime & errors than I had in the previous 2 years with a smaller host, including emails being lost during downtime.  Who knows how many opportunities I've lost because of them.  Today after waiting 15 minutes to see if my site would come back on it's own I spent nearly an hour on hold, my site came back 5 minutes before they got to my call.  They have been nice when they do answer though.

I've given Yahoo! web hosting a poor rating, basically because of the inflexability, and a "gotcha" I ran into after registration.

Basically, I registered through Yahoo!, copperfryingpan.com with the expectation that I could replace the domain name that is hosted at a later date.  Namely, I could have my previous site, hosted by freeservers.com be hosted by Yahoo!, then have copperfryingpan point off to nowhere.  However, Yahoo! ties your user ID with the account FOREVER.  That means I would need to first cancel, then get hit up with another startup fee (I've only had the site for a 3 days) if I want plasticfork.com to "work" with Yahoo!.  This really sucks since it it pretty much just changing one or tow lines in a table.

I talked to two tech support individuals, one concerning POP email and the DNS issue I raised above.

The first tech support person didn't sound that good, but me managed to solve the POP issue.  (Online documentation is REALLY BAD).

The second tech support person was VERY friendly and very helpful.  Unfortunately he had no power to help out on the DNS fiasco.

I called Yahoo! billing to see if they could waive the startup fee, since I had just recently registered (3 days!) and this time they don't register.com to register.

Anyway, I don't blame billing or tech as they are just doing thier job and are really just peons in the whole scheme of things.  However, I do blame the people writing the subscription descriptions and the online help, since they "omit" important things like this which end up costing more money in the end.

Admittedly, $25 is not a lot of money, but one would think that you're signing on for hosting for one domain and you get choose at anytime what that domain is.  Hell, even freeservers.com lets you do that.

I haven't been with yahoo that long but already have a bad taste in my mouth.  After two weeks of trying to get email support for some domain problems I was having, I got someone on the phone who could BARELY speak english, and still didn't get my questions answered.  The support is terrible.  On top of the answers being nothing near what my questions concerned, the response time was at least 1 to 2 days in every case.  My domains have already been moved so I can't say whether or not the actual hosting is much better, but I wouldn't think so after the support I got.  My advice, unless you like having constant problems and no answers in site, is STAY AWAY!

Good speeds, No support! - Review by submitted on January 2, 2003

Customer service rating: 1 out of 10
Technical quality rating: 9 out of 10
Cost rating: 1 out of 10
Overall rating: 2 out of 10
I was using a free Geocities site but once I started maxing out the bandwidth, I decided to go with one of their plans for $8.95. The service was great speed-wise and everything was easy to manage. The webstats never worked but I was using sitemeter.com, which I like.

I've had the Yahoo/Geocities service for one year and one month and only a few days ago have I had a problem with them. I changed my password and had to wait 24 hours to log back in. The next day, I still could not log in.

When I tried to get my password, they kept saying my zip code and country are not correct. I told them that I do live in the US and my zip code is correct. They said they will not help me until I get this info correct.

I politely asked them to verify my billing info and give me my password or my old password. They refused to do so. I told them I really don't want to cancel the service and lose my website, and to please give me a number to call to verify the billing info to get my password.

They continued to give me the whole speech about protecting the customers. I thought, ummm I AM a customer. Because of this, I've already signed up for a new domain, which I will never lose, and webhosting that is 2-3 times better for half the price.

Now I just need to find a way to cancel my Yahoo/Geocities account and according to their website, to do this, you have to be signed in. There is no support, email, forum, or phone number.

How is that that a company that's going to charge me for $8.95 a month for over a year not bother with me and verify my info? The company is run by a bunch of bi-polar crackheads who don't care about their customers and only want money.

I have been hosting with these people since they were Simplenet.  I started my site with them in December 1998.  I am still with them.  Very reliable.  By the way they have phone support it is just not well advertised.  You can reach them at 619-881-3099.  Generally no wait.

I have the Business Starter $11.95/mo package, and have been able to actually access the FTP server for about 10 minutes in the past month! I've sent several inquiries via e:mail (which is like pulling teeth to actually find out how to contact these people) and each time it takes them several weeks to even respond. The last e:mail requested more information. I suppose I'll have to wait another month to find out what to do...in the meantime, I'm still being billed for the service even though I cannot use it. I would have done just as well with one of those "free" accounts. I have internet service through them as well, so I called only to find out they didn't handle the webhosting portion of it. The lady was nice enough, but she gave me a long distance number to call (like I really want to be put on hold for long periods of time on a long distance call). She then said I could e:mail them, but I told her that I've done that and it takes them several weeks to get back with you. Been there, done that...and it didn't work. Even their automated password change didn't recognize my phone number. I can't believe I'm wasting my money on this horrible company!!

While it may seem a safe bet to trust your hosting to Yahoo!, I found it impossible to publish a FrontPage web to my site. Worse, I was unable to get any help - none - using the service. After two requests using their customer support page and an email to the support address, I received only one email containing a FAQ which simply reiterated information available on the help section at their hosting site.
This total lack of support is surprising from Yahoo!, but I intend to contact my credit card company and contest the charge. I'm in the market for a new hosting service...

I have requested a receipt 5 or 6 times via the online submission form that is hard to locate.  Also, there is NO phone support.  Because of no receipt, I ended up having to pay for the URL out of pocket instead of being reimbursed by my company.  Buy URL elsewhere...

I've had good experiences with this host.  It has Real Audio/Video, SSI, Miva and FrontPage.  It's biggest drawback, other than being discontinued now, is that it lacks a cgi-bin, and doesn't allow scripting of any kind (no Perl, PHP, etc).  Customer support was good the one time I've contacted them in my 2+ years with them.  My concerns now are that with their plans changed to the Geocities plans, that my account will be impacted negatively.  Also, I'd really like to be able to use php and perl, now that I've gotten my feet wet with them.

Worst support ever.  I UPGRAED my service from Pro to Webmaster, and now my email does not work.  It seems to be pointed to the wrong mail server (domain pointed to wrong IP address).

Send forms/email to tech support, get back a) nothing at all, or b) form reply addressing a problem I don't have.

If a REAL PERSON would just READ what I wrote, it's easy to fix!!!

I could pay half as much for the same package/(terrible) service, but wanted to upgrade my old GeoCities free account.  So much for making things "easier."

Avoid Yahoo/GeoCities accounts at all costs.  Not worth it, email service completely sucks.

In fact, I'd put my email here, but it's not working, since I UPGRADED my service.  Just in time for the new semester, and after I'd fired off several emails awaiting important replies!!!!

GeoCities is the Devil.

Have been with Yahoo web hosting (the $15 a month plan)since July 2000. For a simple site I have never had a problem. However, as I grow more advanced in my skills (meaning I read a few Dummies guides), I find that not have CGI among other more advanced features is limiting.

Site support has been slow to get a response from a tech, but then again, I have had very little reason to talk to one. One major incident once, and it was resolved within 2 days. Frontpage extension were VERY easy to set up via the VERY SIMPLE but EFFECTIVE console.

However, they have merged their GeoCities sites with Yahoo so I don't know how this will affect my site...

At the time I signed up, I couldn't beat the deal. 100mb and 15GB of bandwidth for $15.

Site is up and running ALL the time.  FrontPage extensions work great.  I have had absolutely no problems.

One drawback however is that site owner must have a Yahoo account with billing to a credit card.  There is no provision for prepayment by check or other "corporate" type payment.  So the hassle is getting reimbursed continually by your employer or client.

The customer service is a joke - no way to "talk" with a real person.  The email has tons of advertising which they do not explain to you when signing up.  GeoCities is not compatible with Front Page 2002.  I am currently seeking a new host for our company.  Any suggestions and if I do switch can I keep my domaine name and email address?

Just try to get service with these guys.  No phone numbers, and evan finding an e-mail or web-form to ask a question or report a problem is tedious.  The hosting part works okay, but I'm extremely disappointed with Yahoo's utter disregard to customer service.  I'll be moving shortly from this plan.

For several years had web hosting by SimpleNet.  Unlimted space and traffic.  No problems.

When Yahoo purchased the business, was forced to a Yahoo plan, and had to transfer major amounts of content.

Also Frontpage extensions are not now available, even though promised.  Service was no help on getting them reinstalled.

What's nice is that it pays for the domain name all at once, so you don't have to upgrade that.  This might make it a little tricky when it comes to transferring.  I've had a good experience and actually have gone well over my stated 150MB capacity several times without problems.  I haven't experienced downtime at all.  I don't do programming (CGI PHP MySQL) etc so I couldn't evaluate their handling of those kinds of services.

I recently opened and uploaded my website to Yahoo's servers. Right after upload I realized there were no Frontpage extentions on the server. I sent a request via the 'priority email' customer service....no answer. I sent a repeat, then another, then another. I have sent a total of 6 requests over the last 3 weeks with no answer. The only answer I got was an autoresponder when I asked how to discontinue my service and move to another hosting company. They won't keep me as a customer, but they are quick to tell me how to leave! Unbelievable!

If you want PHP, MySQL, Perl, ASP, or basically anything, pass by Yahoo! Hosting.  The only server side programming they offer is the rather obscure MivaScript.  The only database formats supported are dBASE III and CSV (which you can create and edit with Excel).  Despite these limitations, this is really my favorite web host.  Yahoo! has the most user friendly of all the consoles I've ever used.  I've never had any technical problems like I've had at other hosts.  Also, my websites are heavily reliant on MivaScript, and there are just not that many hosts out there running Empressa.  Another plus, Yahoo! is well known for taking security seriously.
